This session provides information and opportunities to practice principles of effective communication in a health or social care setting.
It forms part of the Care Certificate, an initiative to prepare healthcare assistants and social care support workers for their roles within care settings in a consistent way.
Any clinical or non-clinical staff, including unpaid and voluntary staff.
This course consists of the following module:
- Communication
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Identify the main reasons why you communicate in your job, and how the way you do it affects individuals and colleagues.
- Explain the use of appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication in a health or social care setting.
- Identify when an individual requires assistance with communication aids/technologies and when to take action.
- Give examples of adjusting to an individual’s communication needs and preferences.
- Identify barriers to effective communication in health and social care settings and how to overcome them.
- Practice communication methods that reduce barriers and meet the communication needs and preferences of individuals.
- Describe what confidentiality means in relation to your role in a health or social care setting
This course meets standard 6 of the Care Certificate:
- 6.1 Understand the importance of effective communication at work
- 6.2 Understand how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of individuals
- 6.3 Understand how to promote effective communication
- 6.4 Understand the principles and practices relating to confidentiality

If you are using our LearnSpace LMS we will arrange training and provide access to our support portal so you can manage and assign training.
All of our courses come with access for one year. If you need to study the course annually, you’ll need to buy a licence each year.
