Resuscitation – Level 2 – Adult Basic Life Support

This course builds on Resuscitation, Level 1, Basic Life Support to provide training specifically related to adult resuscitation. Interactive learning helps learners understand both legal and practical knowledge on policy, emergency response, chest compressions, airway management, and the use of lung ventilations and AEDs. Underlying all this knowledge is the importance of the individual’s roles and responsibilities in their response.

This course is made up of the following modules:

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the signs of clinical deterioration in adults.
  • Discuss how to respond when cardiac arrest is suspected.
  • Describe how to perform the recovery position in an emergency.
  • Describe how to open the airway of a collapsed adult.
  • Describe how to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions.
  • Describe how to initiate and maintain effective rescue breaths.
  • Explain how an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately.
  • Describe the appropriate emergency response for choking.
  • Describe the principles of DNACPR.
  • Explain why someone might have a DNACPR in place.
  • Explain the importance of undertaking resuscitation within the limits of your personal capabilities and training.
  • Identify your individual role and responsibilities in emergency situations.
  • Explain how to report and record details of an emergency event accurately .
  • Discuss how adult anticipatory care decisions, including Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) and local treatment escalation plans (TEPs), are applied, in accordance with local policy and protocols.

This course meets the outcomes for Core Skills Training Framework subject 10, Resuscitation, Level 2, and Care Certificate Standard 12, Basic Life Support.

Subject 10: Resuscitation, Level 2 Adults Basic Life Support

The learner will:

  • understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies and procedures
  • know how to recognise and respond to patients with clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care in accordance with local policy
  • be able to initiate an appropriate emergency response, which may include management of choking, and the use of the recovery position, all in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines
  • be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines
  • be able to provide basic airway management i.e. ensure an open airway
  • be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations in accordance with current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines
  • know how an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can be operated safely and appropriately
  • understand their individual role and responsibilities in responding to persons in emergency situations
  • understand their individual responsibilities in reporting and recording details of an emergency event accurately
  • understand the importance of undertaking any resuscitation interventions within the limits of their personal capabilities and context of any previous training
  • received
  • know how they should apply the local Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Policy / anticipatory care decision within clinical context.
