Safeguarding Children – Level 1
The prevention and protection of children and young people from harm and fostering an environment where they can thrive is a crucial and shared UK societal value. This safeguarding children eLearning Level 1 course provides all healthcare staff and volunteers, no matter what their role, with an introduction to the fundamental concepts and principles of safeguarding children.
It will provide you with an understanding of relevant terms, key legislation, types and effects of harm, and your role and responsibilities in identifying and sharing any concerns you may have.
Safeguarding children and child protection legislation, policy and guidance are updated regularly, and this e-learning is kept up to date in this regard. For this reason, this course may include information that you have not previously been taught, for example, control, coercion, extra-familial harm and extra-familial contexts.

This course is made up of the following modules:

By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Discuss children’s rights in the safeguarding context and have a basic understanding of the relevant UK legislation
- Define and explain key terms and concepts, as well as different types of child maltreatment
- Explain who is responsible for safeguarding children and describe how their role contributes to safeguarding children
- Explain how the parents’ and carers’ physical and mental health, exposure to domestic violence, and substance use or misuse impacts on the child’s safety and well-being
- Name and describe examples of the risks associated with the internet and online social networking
- Identify key guidance and describe local procedures to protect children, and reporting concerns, as well as understanding their importance in information sharing
- Identify sources of advice and support with issues associated with safeguarding and child protection
This course meets the outcomes for Core Skills Training Framework subject 9 Safeguarding Children, Level 1, and Care Certificate Standard 11, Safeguarding Children.
Subject 9: Safeguarding Children, Level 1
The learner will:
- know potential indicators of child maltreatment in its different forms – physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect, grooming and exploitation to support and/or commit acts of terrorism (known as radicalisation)
- be aware of child trafficking, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, modern slavery, gang and electronic media abuse, sexual exploitation, county lines (young people involved in organised crime who are coerced to traffic drugs or other illegal items around the country)
- understand the risks associated with the internet and online social networking
- be aware of the vulnerability of; looked after children, children with disabilities, unaccompanied children, care leavers and young carers, missing children
- understand the impact a parent/carers physical and mental health can have on the wellbeing of a child or young person, including the impact of domestic abuse and violence and substance misuse
- understand the importance of children’s rights in the safeguarding/child protection context
- know what action to take if they have concerns, including to whom concerns should be reported and from whom to seek advice
- be aware of relevant legislation (Children Acts 1989, 2004, and Children and Social Work Act 2017 and the Sexual Offences Act 2003, and the equivalent Acts for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales).
