Dementia Awareness
This course provides an awareness of dementia, a condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Through this course, you will gain essential knowledge and skills to support individuals living with dementia.
The course covers the nature of dementia, its types, stages, diagnosis, treatment, and the role of caregivers and professionals in providing effective support. By exploring the legal framework and best practices in communication, you will be better equipped to promote the well-being and dignity of those with dementia.

By the end of module 1 learners will be able to:
- Explain what is meant by the term ‘dementia’.
- Identify some types of dementia.
- Recognise the signs and symptoms.
- Explain the diagnosis process.
- Describe the treatment and support for dementia.
By the end of module 2 learners will be able to:
- Describe the early stage of dementia.
- Describe the middle stage of dementia.
- Describe the late stage of dementia.
By the end of module 3 learners will be able to:
- Determine their role in supporting an individual with dementia.
- Explain how legislation and policies are designed to promote and protect people’s human rights.
- Determine how dementia affects communication and recognise effective ways to communicate.
- Identify practical ways to encourage physical and mental health to improve wellbeing.
This course meets standard 9 of the Care Certificate Standard when combined with Learning Disabilities Awareness and Mental Health Awareness.
Standard 9: Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability (partially met):
Learners will:
- Understand the needs and experiences of people with mental health conditions, dementia or learning disabilities
- Understand the importance of promoting positive health and wellbeing for an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
- Understand the adjustments which may be necessary in care delivery relating to an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
- Understand the importance of early detection of mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
- Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
